‘Classic’ hay fever symptoms could be mistaken for the Delta variant of COVID-19.

The strain is thought to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of COVID cases in the UK including many in Northern Ireland.

It has similar symptoms to hay fever, including a runny nose, sore throat and headache.

Tips for managing hay fever:

Use a daily antihistamine, preferably which does not make you drowsy.

A nasal saline spray can help remove irritants and allergens from the nose.

An aqueous steroid nasal spray should rapidly reduce and control symptoms whereas COVID-19 symptoms cannot be alleviated this way.
