Day of mourning for Beirut following explosion

A warehouse storing thousands of tonnes of unsecured highly explosive material may be behind the large explosion in Beirut last night (Tuesday).

At least 78 people were killed and over 4,000 injured when the ammonium nitrate exploded.

The Middle Eastern country is observing a day of mourning.

Bomb disposal expert, Ben Remfry told Sky News, he believes the explosion in Beirut was an ‘accident.

However, US President Donald Trump has contradicted Lebanese officials and suggested a ‘terrible attack’ caused the explosion.

Meanwhile, schools minister Nick Gibb says all UK embassy staff based in Beirut are accounted for.
