To the Grand Opera House first and Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the world’s top companies, returns to Belfast with two different shows. An Evening of Music and Dance showcases Birmingham Royal Ballet’s world-class orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. The orchestra will perform alongside the company’s internationally-acclaimed dancers who are joined for these performances by Belfast-born Melissa Hamilton, rising star of sister company The Royal Ballet. Compèred by BBC Northern Ireland’s Noel Thompson, these sparkling performances will include classical pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, and orchestral highlights such as Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending and Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre. Sammy the Scarecrow and all his best straw-friends will arrive at The Argory in Moy in time for all the kids getting off school for half-term break. They are setting up camp in the Pumpkin Patch. Children can take their families on a hunt around the estate to discover beastly bugs and creepy critters who live in the undergrowth, but beware as the walk back will involve bumping into the Mad Scientist who has taken residence in the pump house in the garden! Kids will have to impress him with their bug knowledge to gain their treat. Halloween at The Argory runs from Saturday 26 October to Thursday 31 October, 11am-4pm.

Cry Baby starring Johnny Depp will be shown on November 23 at 10pm as part of the QFT Late line-up in a rare 35mm screening. Alison (Amy Locane) is the epitome of niceness until she falls for bad-boy orphan ‘Cry-baby’ Walker (Johnny Depp). This glorious celebration of American rock ‘n’ roll films has a great soundtrack. It features Traci Lords, Iggy Pop, Ricki Lake and Patty Hearst. This screening takes place as part of BFI Musicals.

Also at the QFT on November 20 is Extreme Job. This action-comedy tells the tale of an incompetent and dysfunctional five-person police team who take over a run-down chicken shop to infiltrate a drug syndicate’s headquarters across the road. However, when their special chicken recipe becomes a massive hit with the public, the line between cooking and crime-busting becomes confused. Eventually the ensemble of misfits begin to discover why they were put together in the first place and why their leader Captain Ko (Ryu Seung-yong) has the nickname ‘Zombie’. This screening is part of the London Korean Film Festival on tour.

Following on from the success of the previous Narnia themed markets, Fine and Dandy Market is delighted to be back. This one off market will be held at the Elmwood Hall. It’s part of this year’s EastSide Arts C.S Lewis Festival. The exhibitors will once again be producing wonderful CS Lewis inspired items. This is a marketplace showcasing the work of independent artists, designers, illustrators and crafters alongside stalls from collectors of records, vintage wares and high quality, local food and drink produce.

An interactive workshop that will allow participants to engage creatively with climate action and ideas for a greener, sustainable future takes place at Queen’s on November 7. It’s hosted by Slugger O’Toole and ESRC Festival NI (Social Science). Climate breakdown is one of the biggest issues facing our socio-ecological world. The complexity of the climate issues facing our planet can often leave us wondering what we can do, and where to even begin.
‘Creating our Sustainable Future’ is an interactive workshop which offers participants the opportunity to consider these socio-ecological issues in a hands-on environment. Opening with a short quiz, participants will work together to share their knowledge of the environment and society (eco-prizes are available for winners).
Through discussion, group work, and engaging with ‘Anna’s Journey’ (a new short play about unsustainability co-written and performed by QUB staff and students), participants will discuss climate breakdown and other related environmental degradation and socio-economic inequalities; examining causes, consequences and alternatives to help us move towards a sustainable future.
Facilitated by staff and students from across the University, participants will work in small groups to create a piece of art (visual, poetry, storytelling, etc.) to communicate their vision for a greener, healthier and sustainable future; using the UN Sustainable Development Goals and pressing environmental and social issues as inspiration. The workshop will conclude with a discussion and refreshments.
