9/11 – New York to mark 18 years since terrorist attacks

Today marks 18 years since the World Trade Center tragedy in New York City began to unfold.

The towers were hit by two planes, killing thousands of people, and a third plane was flown into the Pentagon, while a fourth one crashed in Pennsylvania, despite heroic passengers trying to overpower the hijackers.

September 11 marks one of the worst terrorist attacks in history.

Many people have been recalling where they were when they first heard the shocking, unbelievable news that two planes had been deliberately flown into two of the busiest structures in New York.

On 11 September 2001, the first plane hit the North Tower at 8.46am (1.46pm UK time). Around 20 minutes later, the South Tower was struck by a second American Airlines plane at 9.03am (2.03pm UK time).

A third plane then crashed into the Pentagon at 9.37am (2.37pm UK time). A fourth flight also crashed in Pennsylvania at 10.03am (3.03pm UK time) despite the efforts of passengers to fight back.

New York will today mark the anniversary of the attacks in which 2,996 people were killed and over 6000 were injured.
