Scammers have been posing as volunteers calling at elderly people’s homes, claiming to be collecting envelopes on behalf of churches.
The scammers have offered to deliver the weekly collection envelopes to churches and in some cases, they volunteer to collect prescriptions and groceries in exchange for money.
Churches are reminding older and more vulnerable people that any envelope collections will be arranged in advance, and they should make sure the caller is someone they know and trust.
With church services and Mass suspended, relatives and friends of the elderly and vulnerable who are self-isolating due to COVID-19 are asked to be vigilant.
Many people are genuinely working tirelessly in the community to support those who need it and they are playing a vital role in ensuring older people have food and supplies.
The PSNI has issued the following advice:
· Only use the services of people you know and trust.
· Please ensure you speak with a trusted member of your church to arrange collection or alternative methods for paying your weekly collections.
· Be alert to online and telephone scams, do not share personal or financial details with anyone.
· Keep your doors locked at all times. Use your door chain or peep hole. Check ID, call 101 Quick Check to confirm identity. Please display No Cold Calling stickers or the nominated neighbour scheme.
