By the third week of January, hospitals could be dealing with double the number of COVID-19 patients, according to health experts.
The past 48 hours have been the busiest for hospitals since the start of the pandemic, with some trusts appealing for staff to come to work.
Health trusts have also said more cancer operations could be cancelled.
