Queen Elizabeth II has died peacefully, aged 96.
The Queen remained under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, a statement from Buckingham Palace said earlier. Her doctors said they were concerned for her health, but said the 96-year-old monarch “remained comfortable.”
As news spread of her ill health, crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace.
The Queen’s passing comes more than a year after that of her husband Philip who died aged 99 in April 2021.
Charles, the former Prince of Wales, is now King.
He will address the nation imminently, as the world grieves the monarch.
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
