Commuters can now take advantage of the new park and ride in Toome which has just been completed.
The new facility at the Drumderg roundabout provides 50 more spaces. There is now room for 152 vehicles.
There are five dedicated disabled spaces and two electric car charging points.
The expansion is part of the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson Dualling Scheme. A new pedestrian footbridge has also been constructed to improve accessibility and ensure safe access to the car park for commuters.
Councillor Jordan Greer has welcomed the completion of the facility.
“Having met with the Divisional Roads Manager and contractors recently, I am pleased to see this vast improvement to local infrastructure as part of their overall major scheme. The increased parking capacity will help meet the demand in the area with the footbridge providing safe accessibility,’ he said.
This route sees upwards of 18,000 vehicles per day according to official statistics.
“It is a key transport link between the north west and Belfast with many commuters using it in both directions to their place of work. The old park and ride facility had become too small and very dated looking. The new facilities will make it easier for parking, those using the bus services and car sharing,” he added.
The £160million A6 Dualling scheme will upgrade 14.7 kilometres of the A6 North Western Transport Corridor between Randalstown and Castledawson.
Bus Services 212 & 246 will now serve the new stop in the Park and Ride.
