Scammers are continuing to target householders across Northern Ireland, the most recent being an ‘Amazon Prime’ subscription phone call.
Criminals are targeting people with automated phone calls informing them that they have been charged for a Prime subscription.
The caller asks the householder to press 1 to cancel the transaction. When they do this, they are connected to the scammer who poses fraudulently as an Amazon customer service representative.
The criminal tells the victim the subscription was purchased and that they need remote access to a computer in order to fix a security flaw that will prevent it from happening again.
The householder is then instructed to download an application called Team Viewer and asked to log onto their online banking account.
This gives the scammer remote access to the computer and banking details.
Other variants of the scam call involve householders being told they are due a refund for an unauthorised transaction on their Amazon account.
Hundreds of people who have had cash removed from their accounts.
