An Austalian primary school has dropped the traditional ‘Mother’s Day’ in a bid to be more inclusive.
Families who celebrate the occasion are stuck in a ‘binary world’, according to principal Janet Di Pilla of Brunswick East Primary School in Melbourne.
In an announcement made in the school’s newsletter, the principal revealed that ‘Acknowledgement Day’ would be the first of two for the school.
“We will be holding two of these days each year – one to coincide with the ‘traditional’ Mother’s Day and the other to coincide with the ‘traditional’ Father’s Day,” Ms Pilla wrote.
She said the decision was made after discussion over what would be the best way to celebrate carers of all kinds, not just mothers.
According to Yahoo! Australia, not everyone was as keen with the suggestion.
“The more I hear about what they are allowing to happen to Australia, the angrier I get. Shame on Brunswick East Primary School,” one user wrote on Facebook. “They have now decided to drop the Mother’s Day and call it Appreciation day. That Principal needs sacking for allowing this.”
The school has since apologised for any hurt caused as the news travelled outside of Australia.
