Belfast the movie has been nominated for seven Academy Awards.
It is featured in the Best Picture category, while Kenneth Branagh is nominated for Best Director and the movie is also up for Best Original Screenplay.
Judi Dench is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and Ciarán Hinds for Best Supporting Actor. The film is also nominated for the Best Sound award, and Van Morrison is nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar for ‘Down to Joy’.
The film is the humorous and tender story of a boy’s childhood during the Troubles of the late 1960s in the city where Kenneth Branagh was born. It is set in Mountcollyer Street in Tigers Bay which was where Branagh grew up.
The movie stars Golden Globe nominee Caitriona Balfe, Academy Award winner Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, and introduces, ten-year-old up and coming star Jude Hill. Dornan and Balfe play a passionate working-class Protestant couple caught up in the Troubles, with Dench and Hinds as the grandparents.
