Pupils at a Catholic school in Nashville will no longer be able to borrow Harry Potter books from their library.
Rev Dan Reehil, a pastor at the school, sent an email to parents, suggesting they could cause a reader to conjure up evil spirits.
“These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception. The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text,” the email reads.
Rev Reehil from Nashville’s St Edward Catholic School also states in the email that he has consulted exorcists in the USA and Rome who recommended taking the books out of the library.
Harry Potter is a series of novels written by J. K. Rowling. The novels chronicle the lives of a young wizard, Harry, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The Harry Potter series has been recognised by a host of awards since the publication of The Philosopher’s Stone.
