Workers who have not been able to return to work full time due to COVID-19 will have their earnings topped up, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced.
The Job Support Scheme will replace the furlough scheme when it ends.
The government and firms will cover two-thirds of the lost salary and the employee will keep their job.
All small and medium-sized businesses are eligible – however larger businesses must demonstrate that their turnover has fallen during the crisis. It will run for six months from November.
The aim of the scheme is to prevent job losses.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said it was part of a wider ‘winter economy plan.’
Around 12% of the UK’s workforce are currently on partial or full furlough leave.
