Hundreds of jobs are set to be lost with the closure of five branches of Debenhams across Northern Ireland.
Ballymena, Newry, Londonderry, Belfast and Craigavon will be affected by the move.
The iconic high street chain said it will stay open to get through the remainder of its stock. And even if a buyer is found, it’s unlikely it will want to continue with the bricks and mortar stores.
Debenhams had been in administration since April. JD Sports withdrew its interest and staff were informed of the news on Tuesday morning.
Debenhams began as a shop in central London in 1778, and has lived through world wars. The news comes just hours after Topshop’s owner Arcadia went into administration, putting around 13,000 jobs at risk in the UK.
Shoppers are still able to make purchases in stores and on the website.
