The classic Margherita has been voted our favourite pizza, according to new research revealed ahead of National Pizza Day (February 9).
Margherita brie-zed it’s way to the top of the pizza pops, accounting for 44% of pizzas ordered through online takeaway delivery app Foodhub, with Pepperoni in second place with 16% of the orders.
Analysts from Foodhub, the UK’s 3rd biggest online food ordering app, researched over five million pizza orders across its pizza restaurant partners listed on the online platform to determine the most popular pizza preference.
Surprisingly, Doner Meat pizza was voted the fourth favourite, with 6.7% of orders placed via Foodhub featuring the topping, though the evergreen Meat Feast pizza was slightly more popular with 8.6%.
Despite the continued growth of vegetarianism and veganism, vegetarian pizza only took up 3.7% of the orders – aside from the winning margherita, of course!
The heavily debated, love it or hate it, Hawaiian pizza came in fifth place (5.6%), ahead of BBQ (5.5%) and chicken (5.3%).
Wil Chung, Foodhub spokesperson, said we are head-over-heels in love with pizza.
“But pizza topping choices differ greatly when ordered from a takeaway compared to when people dine in at a restaurant.
“When people order a takeaway, they want indulgence and to eat something they don’t typically eat every day – it’s a treat! This is why orders have leaned more towards toppings like doner meat rather than every-day food items such as ham or vegetarian.
“When ordering a take-out pizza it’s more likely to be shared between family and friends, rather than when you order in a restaurant, so the topping needs to satisfy everyone’s tastebuds.
“Our research has shown that there’s little out there to touch the classic, traditional margherita pizza. It caters for everyone!” he said.
