Multi-screen cinema set to get the green light near Glengormley

A new multi-screen cinema complex near Glengormley is set to get the go-ahead by planners.

The proposed development at Old Church Road will include café and restaurant units in addition to the cinema.

The plans are set for approval at next week’s meeting of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council committee.

The project has been spearheaded by European property development company, Hammerson, which already owns the Abbey Retail Park.

Hammerson manages 22 shopping centres in the UK, Ireland and France as well as 15 retail parks in the UK.

The proposed new cinema would be the first Showcase to open in Northern Ireland. The brand operates 940 screens around the UK, and in the USA, Argentina and Brazil.

The Movie House is less than three miles away in Glengormley. Last year it underwent extensive renovations and there are fears for the future.

Speaking last year, Movie House managing director, Michael McAdam said the site may face closure if the plans were given the green light.

This week, it was announced that the Dublin Road branch of Movie House will close in May after being bought by software firm Kainos.
