Over 1,500 pigs die in shed fire in Kilkeel

Over 1,500 pigs have died after a farm shed fire in Co Down last night.

The blaze broke out on the Carrigenagh Road in Kilkeel at 8.45pm on Monday.


A man suffered minor burns during the incident, according to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Four appliances attended the incident.

The cause is believed to be accidental.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said firefighters worked in difficult conditions to prevent the fire spreading to adjacent buildings.

“It is believed that approximately 1500 to 2000 pigs have perished as result of the blaze. One male casualty suffered minor burns during the incident. The fire was brought under control by 11:50 pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition.”
