First there was a googly-eyed fish in Kuwait, now a library in Indiana in the USA has discovered someone intent on spooking employees with this garish work of art.
A borrower has stuck two googly eyes to the character on the cover of Henry James’ classic, The Turn Of The Screw. For anyone unfamiliar with the chilling tale, the novella follows encounters at a remote country house, and a young governess’s desperate attempt to protect two children Miles and Flora from evil. It’s a typical exploration of the Victorian haunted house theme.
The googly eye incident has prompted the library to post the following message on Facebook: We’d like to remind patrons to not attach googly eyes to books. It can cause damage to the cover and in this case haunt our nightmares for all eternity. Thank you.
Googly eyes are small plastic craft items used to imitate eyeballs. The inner black circle moves freely inside the clear plastic shell, which makes the eyes appear to move when the book is tilted or shaken.
