Greedy restaurant and pub owners will be banned from confiscating waiting staff tips.
The move follows a backlash in 2015, when it emerged that many chains routinely took up to 10 per cent of tips paid for by credit and debit card.
Now Business Secretary Greg Clark has finally won the long Whitehall fight to insist the ban must be mandatory.
In 2016, Sajid Javid, the then Business Secretary, said tips should go directly to waiting staff and proposals were announced which would stop bosses deducting cash, but Mr Javid stopped short of legislating.
High street chains such as Bella Italia, Café Rouge, and Prezzo and Strada regularly take the 10% share of their workers’ tips. Zizzi takes off 8%.
This proposal is part of a larger move which would see the Government boosting workers’ rights.
