To the Ulster Museum first and Pixar Shorts are being screened on Saturday, March 28 from 10:30am. This collection of 12 short films from Disney and Pixar, feature multiple Academy Award nominees and some family favourites.
The shorts include Your Friend the Rat; Presto; Burn-E; Partly Cloudy; Dug’s Special Mission; Day and Night; Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation: Small Fry; and La Luna.
This is part of Cinemagic’s ‘On The Pulse’ festival funded by the Department for Communities through Northern Ireland Screen.

Also being screened as part of Cinemagic is The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh. Pooh’s charming adventures seamlessly unfold in three short stories – ‘Winnie The Pooh and The Honey Tree’, ‘Winnie The Pooh and The Blustery Day’ and ‘Winnie The Pooh and Tigger Too’.
Join Pooh and pals Piglet, Tigger, Owl, Eeyore, Rabbit and Christopher Robin in the Hundred Acre Wood for a family morning out.

Another Cinemagic showing takes place on March 14 from 1pm to 2pm. Lost and Found and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. Lost And Found tells the tale of friendship and loneliness, and follows a little boy who finds a penguin on his doorstep. Although at first he is unsure what to do, the boy becomes determined to help the penguin find his way back home, even if that means rowing all the way to the South Pole. This showing is based on the fabulous picture book by Oliver Jeffers.
We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is based on the children’s book by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury, and the story is about a family who one day decide to go on an expedition to find bears. Working together, they battle their way through freezing snowstorms, sticky mud and dense forests as they set out on their quest. Trouble is not far away however, as when two of the gang become detached from the group and get lost, the rest must do their best to find them.

Storyteller Liz Weir will be appearing at The Secret Bookshelf in Carrickfergus on Saturday, February 15. Liz has a huge fan following as people love her warm and approachable storytelling sessions.
There will also be puppet shows, and a chance to put on your own show, as well as colouring in and plenty of children’s books to explore.

February’s Real to Reel screening at the Queen’s Film Theatre is Sean Baker’s The Florida Project which is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.
It tells the story of 22-year-old Halley (Bria Vinaite), and her six-year-old daughter, Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), who live in a cheap motel near an Orlando freeway, a stone’s throw from Disney World. Halley struggles to keep menial jobs to put a $35-a-night roof over their heads and food on the table. Although her mother struggles, Moonee grabs every day by the tail, corralling her pals from the next motel over to explore abandoned buildings and prank the motel staff, most notably the ever-patient Bobby (Willem Dafoe). When life takes a further downward spiral, Moonee’s defiant, no-holds-barred love for her mother defines her uncertain future.
This is an examination of lives in the shadow of a fantasy world. The screening will be followed by a discussion exploring themes of poverty, childhood and parenting, led by Dr Suzanne Mooney (Lecturer in Social Work, Systemic Practice and Family Therapy Programme Director, QUB) and featuring Bernie McNally (Independent Chair, Safeguarding Board NI), Dr. Lisa Bunting (Senior Lecturer in Social Work, QUB) and Dr. Cate McNamee (Lecturer in Sociology, QUB).

A Streetcar Named Desire is being screened at the QFT on February 21, 22 and 23. Elia Kazan’s film of Tennessee Williams’ stage hit brought Marlon Brando to the attention of filmgoers.
Heated tensions arise when ‘resting’ Mississippi teacher Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) comes to stay with her sister Stella (Kim Hunter) in the cramped New Orleans apartment she shares with her husband Stanley (Brando). Stanley has no time for Blanche’s gentility.

On February 16 a tree planting day will be hosted by Lackan Cottage Farm which is an off-grid property in Co Down. Trees on the land is a cross-border initiative working to establish young native trees across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This year over 400 trees will be planted, as part of a half acre of forest garden and coppice.
Wrap up well, wellies are a must and a spade would be handy. The event will start at 10am.

A Foraging for Wild Foods and Medicine (adults) workshop will take participants on a journey through Tollymore Forest Park in search of edible spring delights. The tutor, an expert forager, will provide participants with the knowledge to find and sustainably harvest your own woodland foods through species identification, while also exploring the role of plants and trees in craft, folklore and medicine.
The course is aimed at those with little or no prior experience in foraging, or those wishing to refresh their knowledge.
This event takes place on Saturday, May 30 at Tollymore Field Studies Centre from 10am t0 4pm.

Bogland and Blackberries – Place-names, Languages and Landscapes will be held at Seamus Heaney Homeplace in Bellaghy on Wednesday, February 19 from 7pm to 8pm.
Place-names are precious relics of times gone by, telling us not only about how our predecessors saw the world around them, but also preserves the rich language spoken by inhabitants of our native places over time.
Bogland and Blackberries will be hosted by the Northern Ireland Place-Name project at the Seamus Heaney Home Place Centre. With guest panellists from Queen’s University and local experts, this interactive event will explore the names of the places that inspired works like Heaney’s Bogland, and how treasures of the landscape and its people remain fossilised in the names around us today, much like they do in the written word. The event is hosted by Joe Mahon, UTV.

Stephen Ryan from Green Woodwork Ireland will teach you the skills needed to make your own piece of furniture in the form of a rustic stool, encompassing the use of the shave horse and a variety of hand tools including the draw knife, auger drill spoke shave and much more.
