The Storming the Castle 10K and family fun day takes place on Sunday, August 25 in Carrickfergus. Last year record numbers ran the 10K Road Race and organisers expect to sell out again. Numbers will be capped at 1,000, so if you want to secure your place to avoid disappointment, book now.
This is a fast, flat course with potential for securing ‘personal bests’. Starting at Carrickfergus Amphitheatre, the route will take you around scenic areas of Carrick, before finishing at the castle.
Early bird rates will apply until 30 June and finishers will receive a goody bag and post-race refreshments. There will be family fun activities in Shaftesbury Park from 2pm to 5pm and a medieval themed Fun Run and Junior Race for children at the Amphitheatre Leisure Centre.

The Ulster Orchestra presents The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom family concert on Saturday, 23 May at the Waterfront Hall.
Terry Davies conducts René Aubry’s inspired scores for this big-screen doublebill. The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom are based on the children’s books written by Julia Donaldson. With live orchestral soundtrack, this will be a fun experience.
The Gruffalo is a film about a mouse who goes in search of a nut. Confronted by three hungry animals, Mouse invents an imaginary monster to scare them away. But then he comes face to face with his own creation. Room on the Broom tells the tale of friendship and family. A kind witch invites a collection of animals to join her on her broom, much to the frustration of her cat. But along the way they encounter a dragon.

Join RSPB NI staff on a bus tour which allows participants to stop and take photographs of nature. Setting off from Enniskillen, people will get a flavour of the area’s natural heritage and history. As the bus goes up around Upper Lough Erne it will stop at viewing points along the way. Wintering birds including whooper swans, teals, mallards, can be seen.

The NI Sustainability Fair takes place on Saturday, February 22.
It will be held at the Ulster University’s Belfast Campus in the Cathedral Quarter, where a range of organisations will be demonstrating a variety of practical ways that people can make a real difference for the planet through their everyday lives.
Supplemented with talks from experts and workshops with organisations, the fair will be focused into four themes, each of which addresses an aspect of daily life.
- Buying Smart – sustainable options, reducing plastic waste, reusing and repairing.
- Eating well – eating through the seasons, foraging, supporting local produce and how you can move towards a more sustainable diet.
- Going Wild – growing your own and what you can do to help and encourage wildlife.
- Bright Ideas – an open forum on everything and anything from carbon footprints, community lead initiatives, transportation and much more.
Admission is free for the marketplace but a small charge applies to specific workshops and keynote talks.

An experience event, Silent Light at Mussenden Temple will be running next month.
Visitors will be walk to Mussenden Temple to see the installation ‘Stained Moons’ by JamesPlumb.
The viewings will take place in silence and in darkness, after twilight, for fourteen nights in February. The first during the Full Moon on 9 February. The last on the New Moon on 23 February.
‘Stained Moons’ is an installation of light and shadow, evoking the eight phases of the moon.
Originally built as a library in the late eighteenth-century by the eccentric Earl Bishop, the Temple serves as an observatory.
