A Taste of Honey comes to the Grand Opera House in Belfast from October 15 to 19.
The National Theatre, producers of War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is bringing Shelagh Delaney’s play here. Directed by Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles), this classic is an exhilarating depiction of working-class life in post-war Salford.
Written by Shelagh Delaney when she was nineteen, A Taste of Honey is one of the great defining and taboo-breaking plays of the 1950s, offering an explosive celebration of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world.

Eighteen performers will be taking part in a Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser for East Belfast Mission’s Meals on Wheels Service.
Every week the Meals on Wheels service provides regular hot meals to over 250 housebound elderly, sick and housebound clients in the East Belfast area who would otherwise be without a substantial daily meal.
This service has grown dramatically in recent years and has experienced demand from agencies involved in the care of the elderly and the disabled. It is a lifeline to the many elderly people who live on their own. The mission now needs to raise the funds to buy a new Meals on Wheels catering van to meet this demand. All of the funds raised by this Strictly event will go toward this valuable work.

You can settle for a showing of Singing In The Rain on October 20 at the QFT in Belfast. Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen’s Singin’ in the Rain is, quite arguably, the greatest movie musical of all time. It’s a kaleidoscope of colours, dance sequences, and songs. The film stars Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor as a trio of Hollywood stars struggling. Kelly’s exuberant dance in the pouring rain is an iconic piece of cinema. Over six decades after its release, it’s still as popular as ever and it’s part of this year’s arts festival.
West Side Story is another film on at the QFT at part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. This musical tells the story of Romeo and Juliet in the slums of 1950s New York.
Natalie Wood stars as good girl Maria, who falls in love with Tony, played by Richard Beymer, who happens to be the leader of the gang facing off against the faction led by Maria’s brother.
The real star of the show, though, is Leonard Bernstein’s score. From “Maria” to “Tonight” to “America” to “Somewhere,” West Side Story features one unforgettable tune after another. Winner of 10 Academy Awards on its original release in 1961, no other musical comes close to matching it for energy.
