The smallest surviving baby in the world has left the hospital in California five months after she was born.
Baby Saybie came into the world at 23 weeks and three days last December, weighing in at just 8.6 ounces – the weight of a large apple – making her the smallest surviving baby in the world, according to officials at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital.
The baby girl, nicknamed ‘Saybie’ by her nurses, was born one week earlier than the legal limit for abortion in Britain.
When mum, who wants to remain anonymous, went for a check-up, doctors told her she had pre-eclampsia – a condition resulting in high blood pressure and birth complications.
Saybie was delivered by emergency Caesarian section.
Her mum said: “I kept telling them: ‘She’s not going to survive. I’m only 23 weeks. It was the scariest day of my life.”
