Novelty Garfield telephones, dating back to the 1980s, are regularly washed up on the shores of Brittany in France. But nobody has been able to explain where the Garfield gadgets kept coming from – until now.
Anti-litter campaigners from the Ar Vilantsou group have been collecting fragments of the phones for years during beach cleans. But now, the secret has been discovered – a lost shipping container.
The container that had once been full of Garfield phones had apparently fallen off a cargo ship in the 1980s. The container floated into the cave, but for years, plastic parts of Jon Arbuckle’s cat were constantly released into the open water.
Collectors still buy and sell the vintage Garfield phone online today.
