Alison Bennington is set to become the first openly gay DUP councillor.
Ms Bennington stood for the party in the Glengormley Urban area of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
The party has long been considered as cold toward the LGBT community in the past.
Ms Bennington polled 856 first preference which wasn’t enough to get elected at the first stage. The quota was 993. She was elected on the sixth count.
There were scenes of jubilation when the announcement was made.
