Minister u-turn on A and AS Level grades

A Level and AS Level pupils in Northern Ireland will be awarded the higher of two grades in an examination u-turn.

The students will be awarded either the grade predicted by their teacher or the result issued by the exams body CCEA last week.

Education Minister Peter Weir made the announcement in a u-turn on Monday.

The announcement came only hours after he informed GCSE students that their grades would be based solely upon teacher predictions.

There has been widespread criticism in the way the A-levels were graded, with a number of children failing to secure a place at their chosen university.

Over 25,000 pupils received their A-level grades last Thursday.

Around one third of grades allocated by teachers to A-level and AS level students were lowered in the final results.

Speaking at Stormont on Monday, Mr Weir said CCEA was working to release the revised results to candidates “as quickly as possible”.
