Any ideas on how to get young people off the streets of Carrickfergus?

Police are asking the community in Carrickfergus if they can assist them with coming up with a solution which will get young people off the streets.

The weekend saw Carrick bear the brunt of the trouble, and with summer approaching, police are keen to focus on a longer term solution.

They are asking people involved in youth work to suggest ideas to keep young people occupied.

There were a number of incidents in Carrickfergus at the weekend, involving young people entering moored boats. Police say items were stolen and damage was caused to the boats.

“These youths were also seen jumping from boat to boat in the dark. Aside from the thefts, I have to highlight the dangers of doing this. Absolute madness. Jumping from boat to boat in the dark in wet conditions…doesn’t take a genius to work out what might happen, and it would not be a pretty picture to have your body fished out and your parents to identify you to police,” said a spokesperson.

Now police want feedback from anyone in the area keen to prevent any further incidents.

“One recurring theme was the complaint that there is nothing for young people to do. While it in no way justifies criminality, there may be some truth in this.

“So, give us some suggestions. If you are a teenager or a parent of one, let us know what facilities or services are lacking or needed in either town.

“If you are involved in a youth project which is underused, let us know and we can spread the word. If we get any ideas we can look into the possibility of funding or facilitating a project,” added the spokesperson.

“This disorder is taking us away from other policing priorities and is not sustainable. We need your help to prevent any escalation this summer.”
