Phone chargers are to be standardised across Europe from 2024 – a move that will force Apple to change to the USB-C – the current standard charger on Android products.
The European Parliament has voted to bring in this EU standard charging port for all mobile phones. The reform was passed by a majority in the European Parliament on Tuesday.
By 2024 not only phones, but also tablets and cameras will have to have a USB-C connector. Apple, which uses its own connector on its products, had previously opposed the move.
The European Union believes this will ensure that users will require only a single charger for all their devices, thereby reducing electronic waste.
USB-C charging ports are used on almost all Android phones, along with Apple iPads and Macbooks.
