Belfast Zoo may have to close its doors if a Sinn Féin motion goes through council next week.
Sinn Fein representative Conor Maskey has called the current use of animals in the zoo a practice which is “outdated, unethical and wrong”.
And he’s calling for a five year transformation period at the current site in a motion to the Belfast City Council meeting this Monday night.
The party has said jobs will be protected.
“The five-year transitional period will enable Belfast City Council to deal with the animals in an ethical manner by working to return them to their natural habitats in a carefully crafted and phased approach.
“Where appropriate, BCC should retain an on-site conservation programme for animals suited to this climate and terrain,” he said.
