Mid Ulster District Council has opened Books of Condolence in memory of Harry Gregg today (Wednesday 19 February).
Signing the book in Magherafelt, where Harry Gregg was born was Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Martin Kearney.
“Harry Gregg was nothing short of a legend, on and off the pitch. His playing career and his enormous talent as a goalkeeper were second to none.
“He played 25 times for Northern Ireland, was voted best goalkeeper at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and turned out 247 times for Manchester United, including in a match 13 days after the Munich Air Disaster, when so many lost their lives and when so many were saved by Harry Gregg’s incredible courage,” he said.
He said everyone who knew him, who had the privilege and pleasure of meeting him, says the same thing: that he was a true gentleman, with enormous integrity, a great capacity for kindness and who gave so much back to our community through his foundation and in countless other ways.
“As a man who was born here in Magherafelt, I feel it is only proper that we open books of condolence to allow the people of Mid Ulster to pay their respects,” he added.
The books are available to sign in the Bridewell, Magherafelt, the Burnavon, Cookstown and in Ranfurly House, Dungannon.
