A child killer who escaped and went on the run is back behind bars.
John Clifford was arrested by police in the Newry area.
Detective Inspector Michael McDonnell said he wanted to thank An Garda Síochána colleagues for their assistance in locating Mr Clifford and facilitating his return to Northern Ireland.
“I would also like to thank those members of the public who contacted us with information and the media for their assistance in publicising our appeals for information,” he added.
Clifford escaped over a week ago after failing to return to custody.
Earlier he was reported to have been spotted in Dublin city centre – near a children’s hospital.
He was jailed in 1989 for the rape and murder of his eight-year-old neice whose body was found beside railway tracks near her Newtownabbey home.
