StopCOVID NI the contact tracing app is now available from Apple’s app atore and on Google Play.
Northern Ireland is the first part of the UK to have a contact tracing app.
If someone receives a positive test result, a unique code will be sent by text message. That message will then invite the recipient to enter the code into the app. And anyone experiencing symptoms of the novel coronavirus can log their information and book a test if applicable.
The technology powering the StopCOVID NI app makes use of people’s smartphones for logging in proximity to other user’s devices.
StopCOVIDNI was due to be officially launched on Friday, but it is now available to download.
Already, hundreds of people have downloaded the app to their mobile phones.
The government says that the app does not gather any identifiable information regarding users, and that no privacy issues are involved.
