Police are reminding people not to post their holiday plans on Facebook or other social media.
The warning comes as a number of homes have been burgled in the area.
Police say your account can be accessed in various ways that might not even occur to you – a mistake in privacy settings, friends of friends and hackers’ ability to access your personal site.
“The summer holidays are fast approaching and no doubt a lot of folk are looking forward to their well deserved family holiday. Here’s a timely reminder when making your plans.
Just imagine it, returning from holiday to find your house has been broken into and somebody has taken the time to enter every room, search through every cupboard and leave the place completely ransacked. It’s certainly a real spoiler but one that you can take steps to reduce,” said a spokesperson.
And their message is loud and clear – DON’T POST ON FACEBOOK OR OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA either before you head off or while you’re away.
Police say it’s very tempting to make those left behind envious with your first pic sitting at the the airport or by the pool with a nice cool drink.
Normally that indicates you’re away a minimum of two to three days.
Police are asking holidaymakers to let your neighbours know you are away and to leave contact numbers for keyholders and family, and to let your police station know.
Most importantly, ensure windows and doors are locked and if you have an alarm to make sure that it’s properly set.
Police say CCTV can be a deterrent and there are many models on the market that can be linked to your smart phone.
“We want you to enjoy your holiday and come back to everything the way you left it, then make everyone envious with your holiday pics,” added the spokesperson.
