A group of around 40 young people armed with sticks were involved in a disturbance at Clarence Street in Ballymena last night (Sunday, January 20) between 10pm and 11pm.
Police say they believe that during the altercation, several men entered a house and assaulted the male occupant who then fled. A number of weapons have since been recovered.
Five men were subsequently arrested. Three, aged 18, 28 and 33 were arrested on suspicion of attempted aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. Two others, aged 32 and 40, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
They all remain in custody, helping with police with their enquiries. Police say there is no indication of any hate crime or racial motivation for this incident.
Detective Sergeant Pete Crothers said they received a number of reports last night that a group of people were involved in a fight and were carrying sticks. He said officers arrived and found that an agitated crowd of up to 40 people had gathered on the street.
“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at last night and saw what happened to get in touch with detectives on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1165 of 20/1/19,” he added.
