Residents in Mid-Ulster can bag themselves free compost next month.
The scheme runs from 8 to 12 May and it’s courtesy of Mid Ulster District Council!
The giveaway is part of Compost Awareness Week and the free compost – which comes from food recycling in Mid Ulster – will be available from the council’s three main recycling centres.
From Tuesday 8 May loose compost will be available at the Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt Recycling Centres.
The incentive comes as part of the Council’s continued effort to increase food waste recycling in the brown bin. Recent statistics have revealed that food waste still accounts for 26 per cent of the waste deposited in the black bin.
Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Ronan McGinley, says the issues of food waste and reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill are strategic priorities for the Council.
“Residents are doing fantastic work on the ground and this is shown by our position in the recycling league tables year-on-year. However, there is still more that can be done. To have food waste still accounting for over a quarter of black bin contents is quite a harrowing figure and one we should be aiming to reduce significantly,” he adds.
A limited supply of the compost is available and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
