Keyless car thefts are on the rise due to the rapid advancement in technology.
This is where the signal from a keyless entry system is captured by a thief outside the victim’s house using a device. The system may appear high-tech but it relies solely on radio waves. With technology, the car system can easily be tricked allowing criminals to gain access to the car without needing the key.
In 2018 car security firm Tracker reported that 88 per cent of the stolen cars it recovered were keyless entry models. Drivers are now being encouraged to use protective pouches to store the key.
Now, police in Mid-Ulster say they have seen an upsurge in keyless car thefts in the district.
Here are some steps courtesy of the PSNI:
1. When not in use, store your key in a security pouch. They are sometimes called Faraday bags or signal blockers and they are inexpensive. They will prevent the signal from your vehicle being captured.
2. Remember to secure ALL keys in the security pouch including any spare keys.
3. Secure your car in a garage or behind locked gates if you can.
4. Using chains and steering locks can also make it harder for the thief.
