A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fraud in west Belfast after he was accused of applying for a loan as part of the government’s COVID-19 business support scheme.
He was arrested today (Tuesday 19 May) by detectives from the PSNI’s Economic Crime Unit.
Detective Inspector Murray said shortly after noon on Monday, it was reported that the man attended a local bank in the greater Belfast area to apply for a loan.
“Following further enquiries, the man in attendance was not who he claimed to be and was arrested in the west Belfast area. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries,” he said.
Police are asking businesses to be vigilant.
“We would ask all businesses to remain vigilant if they believe that fraudulent activity is taking place at this time.
“If you believe that you or your business may be a victim of this type of offence, please contact police on 101 or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime,” added Detective Inspector Murray.

Police have charged a 38 year old man with fraud by false representation.
He is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court via video link this morning, Wednesday 20th May.
