A driver was left in a distressed state following an attempted hijacking in the Donegall Street area of north Belfast in the early hours of this morning (Friday, April 23).
Police say shortly before 2.10am, a man approached a silver Toyota Yaris, which was sitting at traffic lights at the top of Donegall Street.
The man had a verbal exchange with the driver before getting into the back seat of the car. He then got out of the car and reached for the driver’s door.
Police say the driver was able to drive off.
A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempted hijacking and interference with vehicles. He is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Saturday, April 24).
As is usual procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
Detective Sergeant Wilson said: “This was a distressing incident for the driver, and I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything, or who may have dash cam footage to contact us on 101 quoting reference 115 of 23/04/21.”
