Children are more likely to suffer harm by non attendance as the new school term approaches, than if they catch COVID-19, the UK’s chief medical adviser has said.
Professor Chris Whitty said ‘the chances of children dying from COVID-19 are incredibly small’ – but missing lessons ‘damages children in the long run.’
Children in Northern Ireland are due to return to school this week, with some year groups starting tomorrow (Monday).
“There’s also very clear evidence from the UK and around the world that children much less commonly get a severe illness and end up having to be hospitalised if they get symptomatic COVID-19,” he added.
His interview came as chief and deputy chief medical officers representing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland said there were ‘no risk-free options’ as schools open their doors this week.
