A metal poppy has been stolen from an ex-serviceman’s grave in Carrickfergus.
The poppy was taken from the grave at Victoria Cemetery sometime prior to Sunday, and it has caused immense distress to the late gentleman’s widow.
The family is now appealing for the poppy to be returned and police are asking for the help of the public in locating the item.
“There was a superb turnout in the town on Sunday for the annual Remembrance events. Unfortunately the same level of respect was not shown a short distance away at Victoria Cemetery.
“At some stage, before Remembrance Sunday a metal poppy was removed from a grave.
“The removal of this item from a clearly marked ex-serviceman’s grave has caused obvious unnecessary suffering for the family members, especially the widow of the gentleman at rest,” said a police spokesperson.
“Despite their suffering in what is a particularly poignant time of year, the family only wish for the item to be returned and would consider the matter closed if that were to happen,” added the spokesperson.

On Sunday, fireworks were thrown at churchgoers in Magherafelt, prompting police to issue a stern warning.
