Wreaths laid to commemorate VJ Day were destroyed and placed in a bin in Glengormley Park.
The wreaths were laid during an act of remembrance which was held at Lilian Bland Park on Saturday (August 15).
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Jim Montgomery said he was ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the ‘disgraceful act of vandalism’.
“These wreaths were laid as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives and as a reminder of the sacrifice that was paid for our freedom today,” he said.
“Their destruction shows complete disregard for those servicemen and women who fought so valiantly for our country.
“I wholly condemn this unacceptable behaviour and appeal for anyone with any information to contact the PSNI.”
At the weekend, poppy wreaths were burned on a bonfire in Londonderry, leading to widespread condemnation including strong words from the Deputy First Minister, Michelle O’Neill.
Absolutely disgusted that mindless idiots have desecrated poppy wreaths at Glengormley War Memorial.
