Sickening footage has been obtained by an Australian television channel of an off-duty police officer appearing to throw rocks at a wombat.
The video which is too upsetting to post, shows the officer stoning the animal before it dies
The video was obtained by 7NEWS.com.au, and has been edited due to the distressing content.
In the footage, the wombat is seen being followed by two men in a car.
One man gets out of the car and starts chasing the animal. The other man in the car says: “Get up close.” The man chasing the animal throws a large rock at the wombat’s head.
It tries to escape, despite its injuries, but the man picks up another rock and runs after him.
“You’ve got him, you’ve got him, hit him, hit him. Kill him,” the man in the car can be heard saying.
The second man then throws another rock at the wombat’s head.
“First man I’ve ever seen kill a wombat on foot, bro,” the man in the car says.
Police have launched an internal investigation into the incident.
”I can confirm that we’re investigating it and it will be dealt with as a disciplinary matter,” SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told 7News.com.au.
