Stomach churning cockroach milk could be new ‘superfood’

This might make your stomach churn, but according to scientists, drinking cockroach milk could become the next superfood trend.

Scientists say it is rich in protein and more nutritious than almond milk.

According to the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India, the cockroach produces ‘milk’ made up of protein-infused crystals.

The researchers say there’s potential to mass the milk on a mass scale, but for now it can only be extracted in a lab, so it could be some time before it is developed further.

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) said in a study that the structure of protein crystals found in the gut of the baby cockroach and reported in an IUCrJ paper suggests it’s a novel human food source of the future.
Cockroach milk is sourced from the Pacific Beetle cockroach, that gives birth to live offspring and produces ‘milk’, which it feeds its embryos through a ‘brood sac’. There is no actual ‘milking’ involved, but the cockroach’s gut has to be carved out in order to access the milk, which is in the form of crystals.
And of course, it hasn’t gone down too well on social media.
