Strangers accessing chat rooms to talk to children

Parents are being warned that strangers are accessing chat rooms to video call children and young people.

This chat room Omegle is proving popular among children, but strangers are increasingly using it to talk to young people, under the guise of someone else.

Police say sometimes the person on the other end isn’t who they say they are.

Police in Antrim say they have received information about this website and are warning parents of the dangers. Omegle offers random chatrooms and video conferences.

“So, to keep your wee ones safe online, ensure internet chat rooms such as this one are blocked via your computers security software and parental controls throughout all devices in the home.

“Take an interest in what your children are viewing online, especially during these times of lockdown and the kids being home more often. Finally, ask your children if and who they have been talking to online, which can be done through online gaming and streaming channels. Sometimes, the person on the other end isn’t who they say they are.

“If such an incident occurs with your own children, please contact police on 101,” said a police spokesperson.
