Two cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in the UK.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid says there will be targeted testing in Chelmsford and in Nottingham where the cases were discovered.
The cases are apparently linked.
Omicron has also been found in South Africa, Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.
Travel bans have begun.
