A woman was arrested in Enniskillen at the weekend on suspicion of begging.
Police say they were contacted by a resident who expressed concern about the number of people begging on the streets.
And they say they are investigating this matter and conducting regular patrols of the town centre. In the meantime, they are asking the public not to give money, but to offer food or a hot drink.
Police are reminding people that begging is a criminal offence and, depending on the type of incident, are mainly dealt with under the Vagrancy Act, Public Order Legislation or the Children and Young Persons Act.
“When we find people on the street who are vulnerable and in need of help we work with other statutory and charitable agencies to keep them safe,” said a police spokesperson.
They are reminding people that they can donate to a registered charity who will take a coordinated approach to tackling the problem.
“There is an effective strategy already in place to offer assistance to those who need it most, and your contribution will be most effective when channelled through the most appropriate agency.
“Food banks and charities who support those in poverty such as St Vincent DePaul and the Salvation Army all need support to deliver effective services and will make the most of your contribution,” added a spokesperson.
