Stop the stigma – mental health awareness night in Larne

A mental health awareness night will be held at Larne Rugby Football Club, on Friday (January 18) at 7.30pm.

The event is in association with Every Life Matters (ELM) and Mind Your Noggin.

The session will focus on mental health and suicide awareness and its aim is to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health, particularly in older teenagers and young adults.

Organisers are asking everyone to come along, whether you’re part of a club, a business or a school. Guest speakers will provide information and there will be a question and answer session.

To facilitate some light refreshments, organisers would be grateful if those interested could contact the club. Drinks are also available to purchase as the bar will be open.

This event is for adults and children from year 8+.

Carers are at higher risk of mental health problems

More than one million people who are caring for children and older relatives are at a higher risk of mental health problems. They’re also more likely to be struggling financially than the general population, official data has revealed.

The ‘sandwich generation’ who find themselves squeezed between older and younger dependents account for around 1.3 million people – that’s according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

One-third of the 240,000 people who look after children and a vulnerable relative for over 20 hours a week, report anxiety or depression.

That figure falls to 23 per cent among those whose care duties take up less than five hours a week.

The problem disproportionately affects women, who make up 62% of so-called sandwich carers, the majority of whom are aged between 35 and 54 years old.
