There has been a number of reports recently in relation to cold callers around the province, including Newtownabbey.
In one incident, a man with no identification, claiming to be from the water board requested entry to a property.
Police say if you have elderly relatives or friends who live alone, unfortunately they may be more vulnerable to these type of callers.
They have issued some advice in the event of a cold caller knocking on the door.
– Keep front and black doors locked.
– Fit a door bar/chain and use it.
– Only deal with callers by appointment.
– Always ask for an identity card and check it carefully.
– Always use reputable tradesman who are recommended by someone who has used them.
– Never do business with cold callers.
– A reputable company will always draw up a contract regardless of price of work to be done but don’t sign there and then. Take time to think about it – a reputable trader will understand.
– Do not keep large amounts of money in your house.
– NEVER agree to go to your bank/ building society/post office to withdraw money and never hand over a signed black cheque.
– If a doorstep seller refuses to leave your premises, close the door and call 999.
