Don’t be tempted to head to Portrush – warning as checkpoints are in place

Police have been carrying out a vehicle checkpoint on the north coast to deter people from travelling to Portrush and Portstewart.

In recent weeks, daytrippers have poured into the towns, but as stricter COVID-19 lockdown rules kick into action, motorists have been warned.

PSNI officers now have powers to demand people go home, and to take them to their normal residences. The stay-at-home order means that anyone away from home without a reasonable excuse could face a £200 fixed penalty notice or a fine of up to £5,000 if the case heads to court.

First Minister Arlene Foster has expressed concern at the gatherings on the north coast.
