Householders are being warned about the latest telephone scam targeting the vulnerable and elderly.
At the end of the phone, householders will hear an automated message saying that they have been caught using a mobile phone whilst driving and will receive a £60 fine and six penalty points.
The automated message will ask householders to follow instructions following the message – however Scamwise NI says this is the latest scam to be used by fraudsters.
“If you get a call like this, hang up and don’t follow any instructions. It’s a scam. The police will never contact you using an automated phone message,” says a spokesperson.
The warning comes as scammers have been targeting unsuspecting people out of thousands of pounds, by tricking them into thinking they have been charged for the Amazon Prime service.
Police in Scotland say over 200 cases have been reported to them in the last two months alone.
They say that householders are receiving automated calls informing them that they been charged for an Amazon prime subscription. The householder is then invited to cancel the charge, which will connect them to the scammer who claims to be from Amazon customer service.
The caller then asks the householder to download ‘Team Viewer’, which gives the scammer remote access to the computer while they log into their online bank account.
